  • Buccaneers Lose To Chiefs After Poor Defense

By Lily Belcher Tom Brady’s late offensive production fell short in Tampa Bay’s 41-31 loss to Kansas City Sunday night. It was the most points given up by the Buccaneers defense since Todd Bowles joined the coaching staff back in 2019. The Bucs gave up the ball early after fumbling it to the Chiefs after the kickoff, allowing Patrick Mahomes’ offense to score an early touchdown. Tampa Bay answered with a field goal, but their defensive line allowed the Chiefs to take an early and commanding lead. Kansas City scored again on their next two possessions with 79-yard drive and 86-yard drive into Tampa Bay’s endzone, giving Mahomes three touchdowns in the first quarter as Tampa Bay trailed 21-3. After a touchback to start the second quarter, Brady moved the ball downfield before completing a 13-yard touchdown pass to Mike Evans, who was back on the field this week after serving a one game suspension. Kansas City and Tampa Bay each scored at the end of the second half to maintain the Chief’s lead at 28-17. The Chiefs slipped another touchdown past Tampa Bay’s line, despite the defense sacking Mahomes at the 10-yard line before he completed his fourth touchdown pass of the game. The Buccaneers answered with a touchdown before Kansas City tacked on another three points with a quarter ending field goal. Despite Brady’s urgent attempt to catch up from a 41-24 deficit in the fourth quarter, scoring a touchdown in the final eight minutes of the game, his offense failed to make up for the weak Buccaneers defense. The Buccaneers gave Brady the ball back after an interception off Mahomes with less than five minutes to go in the fourth. Racing the clock, Brady made five quick plays without a huddle and drove the ball into the endzone one last time with a short pass to Leonard Fournette. Tampa Bay got one more possession in the last 45 seconds but failed to close the ten-point gap that gave them their second straight loss. The Buccaneers look to improve their record next week with a 1 pm matchup in Tampa against the Atlanta Falcons.

  • Rays Clinch Fourth Consecutive Postseason Berth

By Lily Belcher The Tampa Bay Rays secured their fourth consecutive postseason appearance in a 7-3 victory over the Houston Astros Friday night. The Rays became the fifth team to clinch the postseason eight times since 2008, joining the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, and St. Louis Cardinals. They are also the first AL team in the expansion era to clinch the postseason berth on a 9+ game roadtrip. “It’s nice to get a win and know that were in,” Kevin Cash said with five games to go in the regular season. Drew Rasmussen pitched seven innings, using only 73 pitches and giving up just two runs to the AL West Champions. He retired 10 of his last 11 batters before being relieved by Javy Guerra and Colin Poche for an inning each. The seven-run win came off a handful of well-timed hits. Harold Ramirez got a two out RBI base hit in the first inning to score Yandy Diaz from third. Randy Arozarena drove in Diaz with a triple in the fifth and scored off a Wander Franco single in the same inning. Francisco Mejia, Jose Siri, and Taylor Walls scored in the sixth and Taylor Walls tacked on another insurance run with a solo shot in the eighth. After a muted on the field celebration, the Rays celebrated in the locker room with a champagne and beer shower. “I think, as we know, our hopes [are] on our pitching staff and to have those guys front lining it is huge,” said Pete Fairbanks between a beer splashing contest with Shane McClanahan. Due to a seemingly endless number of injuries, the Rays relied on their flexibility in the lineup and resilience on the field. The teamwide ability to adapt to these injuries and the reliable performance of the starting lineup led Tampa Bay to their eighth post season appearance. Right now, the Rays are set to face the Cleveland Guardians in a three game wildcard series in the first round of the postseason bracket. Until the postseason, the Rays will play two more games against Houston and head to Boston for the final three games of the 2022 regular season.

  • Glasnow Returns In Time For Postseason

By Lily Belcher The Rays right hander underwent surgery on August 4, 2021 after a partial tear to his ACL last summer. While Glasnow maintained he would be back as soon as possible, Kevin Cash and the Rays set his earliest potential return date to the 2022 postseason. Still, Glasnow returned two weeks early while the Rays battle for a spot in the postseason. Tyler Glasnow made his return to the mound Wednesday night just 13 months after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Glasnow pitched three innings with three strikeouts and gave up one homerun and one single in his first outing of the season. The Rays ace looked collected on the mound, seemingly unphased by the pressure of his season debut, tossing a 98 mph fastball for his first pitch. He tossed 29 fastballs (with a maximum velocity of 99 mph on eight of them) in the two-hit, 50 pitch outing. Glasnow also showcased his curveball and slider against Cleveland’s offense. Christian Bethancourt hit an RBI single to score Ji-Man Choi from second in the second inning to spot Glasnow a one-run lead. While Glasnow got the first six Cleveland batters out, he gave up the solo shot to Gabriel Arias, tying the game at one run. Glasnow was relieved by Garrett Cleavinger, Calvin Faucher, and Brooks Raley before an hour weather delay interrupted the game in the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, the Rays loaded the bases with a leadoff base hit by Choi followed by two walks, broken up by a stolen base by Choi’s pinch runner Miles Mastrobuoni. With Jose Siri up to bat with one out, the game was delayed and Siri grounded into a double play to leave the bases loaded after the rain passed. Heading into the top of the tenth, the Rays went three up, three down before handing the ball over to closer Javy Guerra. Guerra intentionally walked Andres Gimenez who advanced to third before Amed Rosario hit a walk off RBI single to end the game. With just seven games to go in the season ending road trip, the Rays look to clinch the post season berth while clinging to the second wildcard spot. Toronto is two games ahead and Tampa Bay is a half game ahead of Seattle, with Baltimore trailing by four and a half games. The Rays will face the Guardians in the final regular season matchup Thursday at 6:10 pm.
