  • Hockey and drinks: the perfect combination

By: Cristina Hauerstein It's finally game day and you and your friends gather around the living room ready to watch your team win against the opposition. It's also Friday night and no one has to go work in the morning, so one of you suggests a drinking game, and it's this one. Here are the rules: (Reminder that you should NOT be participating in drinking activites if you are under the age of 21 in the US or 18 in Europe, alternatives will be added for those who are underage!) Drink every time the announcers miss-pronunce a player's name. alternative: do 10 push-ups Drink when a player takes a penalty (2 sips if it's a player who's prone to taking penalties) alternative: recreate the penalty with a friend (no actual harm though) Drink when your team scores a goal (2 sips if it's your favorite player) alternative: create your best celly Drink when the refrees make an obvious bad call (good judgement is key) and then yell out ref you suck alternative: still yet at the refs, then do 10 push ups Drink when a fight breaks out alternative: do 10 sit ups or a shot of vinegar Drink everytime the announcer compliments the opposing team or makes mention of how either team would do during the playoffs alternative: truth or dare challenge from a friend or do 10 sit ups. Drink whenever the "NHL23" add comes on alternative: 5 push ups (we all know how often that one comes on) Drink if you win or lose alternative: dance party!!!! • The End Of An Era : The Rays Say Goodbye To Kiermaier and Choi

By Lily Belcher The Tampa Bay Rays have started the offseason off with some big moves, losing two fan favorites: Kevin Kiermaier and Ji-Man Choi in just a few hours on November 10. The Rays opted out of Kiermaier's 2023 contract, ending his 12 year career with the Rays and sending him to free agency. The three time Gold Glove and Platinum Glove winning centerfielder has had a career filled with highlights. His commitment to defense and hustle on the basepath was unmatched in the Rays organization, giving him an impressive highlight reel of diving catches, run-saving collisions with the outfield wall, and long relay throws to home plate. "I am the luckiest man on the planet to have been a part of Rays Baseball for 12 years. They gave me an opportunity and I ran with it. [It's] impossible to express how much I love everything here in Tampa/St. Pete," said Kiermaier in a tweet after the Rays announced they would not pick up his 2023 contract. However, Tampa Bay knew his contract was running out and it was time to bring in a new outfield leader. Kiermaier's batting average remained less than impressive throughout the 2022 season and injuries kept him off the field. In late July, the Rays announced Kiermaier would be out for the remainder of the season after undergoing hip surgery. Unfortunately, this would also be the end of his career as a Ray. "I am so thankful, appreciative, grateful for everything thrown my way and for the people of this community, you mean the world to me," said Kiermaier. "...My time here is done but I will be a part of this community forever." Declining the centerfielder's club option was not a surprise for fans. On September 24, the Rays played a tribute video at Tropicana Field and Kiermaier stepped out of the dugout for one last encore. Now, Kiermaier faces free agency in the off season as he looks for a new stadium to call home in 2023. Hours later, the Rays announced first baseman Ji-Man Choi was traded to the Pirates for Minor League right-handed pitcher Jack Hartman. Pittsburgh was in need of a starting first baseman and Choi will fill that void in the Pirates lineup. Choi's energy on the field and and in the dugout made him a favorite at Tropicana Field. For five seasons Choi reached for ground outs, doing the splits off first to catch throws from his fellow infielders and keeping his foot on the bag. He would turn to the dugout with a grin and celebratory wave after reaching base. And he would interact with the crowd and fans before the game. "What a surprise news that I am no longer with the Rays. I wish I were going to retire with the Rays uniform, but what can I say?" said Choi in an Instagram post to his fans. Hartman is a 24 year old right handed pitcher from the Bradenton Mauraders, the Pirates single A affiliate. Hartman was a fourth round draft pick from Appalachian State in 2020 and underwent Tommy John surgery the same year to prepare for the Big Leagues. This is a typical move from the Rays, who are always looking to the future and building up their minor league teams. While the loss of Choi hurts, the Rays have plenty of infielders who can fill the role. And, with rumors of Evan Longoria returning to the Rays this year, the Rays could move some players around the field to make room for Longo at third for one final season. With 95 days to go until pitchers and catchers report, the Rays have plenty of time to make more moves.

  • Dusty Baker Leads Astros To "A Wonderful Thing"

By Lily Belcher Johnnie B. "Dusty" Baker looked down at his score card to pencil in the final out of the 2022 World Series before celebrating with his fellow coaches in the dugout. With a fly out to right fielder Kyle Tucker, the Houston Astros became world champs and Baker became the oldest manager to win a championship in the NFL, NHL, NBA or MLB at 73-years old. Despite his long list of accomplishments and records, this was Baker's first World Series title, making it a special moment for the longtime ball player. He is also the only manager to lead five different teams to the post season and the third Black manager to win the championship title. “Had this happened years ago, I might not even be here. So maybe it wasn’t supposed to happen so that I could hopefully influence a few young men’s lives and their families and a number of people in the country through showing what perseverance and character can do for you in the long run," said Baker after the win. The Astros trailed the Phillies 2-1 in the World Series, with a tough 7-0 loss in game three. However, Baker's team was undeterred, stepping onto Citizen's Bank Park for game four poised to make history. Four Houston pitchers combined for the shutout no-hitter, becoming the second team in MLB history to no-hit an opponent in the Fall Classic (Don Larsen tossed a perfect game in 1956). With the series tying game four victory, the Astros took game five and six in Houston to win their second title in six years in front of their home crowd. Saturday night's 4-1 World Series victory was a result of a four-run bottom of the sixth, including a three run blast by Yordan Alvarez. An RBI single by Christian Vazquez drove in Alex Bregman to secure the Series for Houston. Amid team celebrations, Baker's individual accomplishments were recognized by fans and players, who have grown to love the skipper's dedication to his team and the game. Players shared anecdotes of Baker's thoughtfulness with gifts in the locker room and fans boasted signs saying "Win 4 Dusty" and similar messages. "It's a wonderful thing," Baker said simply, with a wide grin. Pitchers and catchers will report for Spring Training on February 14, 2023. Follow us for trade and offseason updates until then.
