  • Brady Disappoints In Bucs Loss To Packers

By Lily Belcher TAMPA---The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost their home opener on Sunday to the Greenbay Packers as the two oldest active quarterbacks battled in the Buccaneers’ 14-12 defeat. Brady’s hesitance on the field was obvious, especially in the first half, making short passes and getting sacked twice by the Packers. This may have been due to an injured ring finger on his throwing hand, despite his claims that it wasn’t bothering him since it was reported after the Saints game last week. The Buccaneers scored a field goal in their first possession with a 48 yard drive down the field; however, Brady took a late sack at the 27 yard line on third down, forcing Ryan Succop to make the 45 yard field goal. Rodgers answered with a 75 yard touchdown drive, including a 21 yard pass that was fumbled and recovered by Green Bay receiver Tyler Davis. Green Bay scored on their next possession after a 71 yard drive by Rodgers to give the Packers a 14-3 lead over the Bucs. Both teams’ defenses were highlighted in the second and third quarter as they held off the two star quarterbacks. Tampa Bay only managed to score one more field goal off the Packers defense until the end of the fourth quarter. With just over a minute to go in the fourth quarter, Brady drove the ball down the field into Green Bay’s end zone, trailing by eight points. Brady moved the ball to Green Bay’s one yard line before completing a short pass to Russell Gage for only his second touchdown pass of the year, bringing the score to 14-12. After a delay of game penalty moved the two-point conversion attempt back five yards, Brady failed to complete the pass to Gage and the Bucs lost their first game of the season. This is the second year Rodgers has beaten Brady in their faceoffs and could be the last with both quarterbacks reaching retirement age. The Buccaneers will host the Kansas City Chiefs on October 2 at 8:20.

  • New Rules To Be Implemented In MLB's 2023 Season

By Lily Belcher Commissioner Rob Manfred announced three new rule changes to the 2023 season on behalf of MLB and the MLBPA at the beginning of September. As a result of the new CBA, a joint Competition Committee was created to address key issues in the rulebook and vote on them ahead of the upcoming season. Three major changes will be made in the 2023 Championship Season: 1- A 15 second pitch clock (with bases empty) or a 20 second pitch clock (with runners on) 2- Regulations to defensive shifts (two infielders on either side of second base within the outer boundary of the infield 3- Bases will be an 18-inch square “These steps are designed to improve pace of play, increase action and reduce injuries, all of which are goals that have overwhelming support among our fans,” said Manfred in a statement about the new rules. Now, these new rules shouldn’t shock fans who have been listening to discussions around MLB and MiLB over the past few years. With a general concern for the length of the game and player safety, Rob Manfred has allowed the implementation of the pitch clock, larger bases, and shift regulations to go through a trial run in the minors. The minor league pitch clock presented key flaws during its trial run since 2015, leading to the addition of a two pick off attempt limit in the MLB rule for 2023. Data shows that the average time for a nine-inning game has decreased an average of 26 minutes in the minor leagues that used the new pitch clock rules last year, according to statistics from Baseball America. To regulate defensive shifts, the new rules dictate that two infielders must remain on either side of second base and all infielders must keep both feet in the infield dirt. This prevents a team from stacking players on one side of second or in the outfield based on their opponents’ batting tendencies. There has been a .003 increase in batting average in Double-A, which implemented the shift rules last year. Triple-A, which did not implement the shift ban last year saw a .001 increase in averages. Finally, MLB will use 18-inch bases, as opposed to the current 15-inch bases, in the 2023 season. This is intended to protect the players and prevent spiking at first base. This also will slightly decease the distance between bases and could promote more stolen base attempts. According to the press release from MLB, stolen bases attempts have increased by .6 per game with a success increase of about 9%. • Lightning Prospects Fall to Nashville Prospects

By: Cristina Hauerstein Tampa Bay Lightning prospects lose to the Nashville Predators prospects 5-2 during their first prospect game of the year in North Carolina. The teams started off strong making the game pretty even, but the Bolts quickly started taking penalties and the predators got opportunities, leading to Egor Afanasyev to score the first goal for the predators in the first period. Despite Nashville getting their first goal, and Lucas Edmonds takinfg that first penalty, the Lightning were able to keep control of the puck and get a few shots in despite, the Predators goalie Yaroslav Askarov stopping them from going through. Second period started off strong for Nashville, putting in an early goal by Marc Del Gaizo. The Lightning was able to keep up their speed after that and phiscality started to increase between both teams and a few fights broke out in the second and third period of the game, and penalties were called for both teams. Jack Finley and Gabriel Fortier continued to show their worth this year during this game along with Gage Goncalves, keeping up the chemistry this prospect team has. During the third period, the Bolts thankfully found themselves with a power play of 5-on-3 and gave Felix Robert the opportunity to score his first goal for the lightning tonight and he was able to bring the score to 2-1. Soon later after a fight between Declan Carlile and Cameron Hausinger the Predators were able to bring their score up to 3-1. Later on Nasvhille had 2 empty netter goals with a Fortier goal for Tampa in between those to goals. Despite the devistating loss, the prospect Tampa team put up a fight and willl be back stronger Sunday against the Panthers at 1PM ET. QUOTES FROM THE "Bolts drop Prospect Showcase opener to Nashville." BY CHRIS KRENN FROM THE PLAYERS "It's always nice to score," said Robert . "Next game, we want to win...... Obviously, the first couple of games it's about getting the pace and getting the timing. It's good to be on the ice with all the rookies. It was a fun game." "I like the pace we're bringing." Robert added. "Everybody's good, so we've just got to find a way to score... the pace was there and we'll get our chances." Jack Finley on his teammates: "Gage and Forts are both really good players," said Finley. "I know both of them really well. I spent a little bit of time in Syracuse during the COVID year and practiced with them lots and I've pplayed with them a bit... They're both really smart players. Forts can fly and Gage is a great playmaker, so I think all of our games complement each other really nice so it was fun."

  • Defense Wins Season Opener For The Tampa Bay Buccaneers

By Lily Belcher The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took their first win of the season in a 19-3 defeat over the Cowboys in Dallas during Sunday’s season opener. Tom Brady became the oldest quarterback to start an NFL game Sunday night, but it was the Bucs’ defense that deemed Dallas’ running game ineffective, holding them to just one 51-yard field goal to give the win to Tampa Bay. Head coach Todd Bowles credited the defensive victory to teamwide communication and the leadership of linebacker Devin White, who is in his fourth season with the Buccaneers. Bowles highlighted the calling and execution of key defensive stops by his team and called White the defense’s quarterback in a post-game interview. On the offensive side, Godwin made his return to the field after tearing his ACL and caught Brady’s first pass of the 2022 season, moving the ball 24 yards up the field and putting Tampa Bay in field goal range to tie it up after the Bucs’ first possession. The Bucs quickly gained the lead with another field goal in the first quarter in the next drive after Tom Brady moved the ball down the field, leaning on running back Leonard Fournette to move the ball. Fournette rushed 137 yards Sunday night (the most in a single game since joining the Buccaneers) and caught two passes. After a missed 36-yard field goal to start the second quarter, Cowboys quarterback threw an interception to give the Bucs the ball back. Two more field goals gave Tampa Bay a 12-3 lead heading into the second half. Brady expressed some disappointment with his team’s ability to get the ball into the end zone during the post-game. A third quarter, 17-yard, one-handed catch by wide receiver Mike Evans in the end zone was the only touch down of Sunday’s match, but it was more than enough to give the Bucs their first win of the season. The Buccaneers (1-0) are set to take on the rival New Orleans Saints (1-0) next Sunday at 1 pm in Louisiana.

  • Franco's Return Leads Rays To Victory Over Yankees

By Lily Belcher The Rays took the series opener in New York Friday night with a 4-2 win over the Yankees. Wander Franco, who went 3-for-5, made an impactful return to Tampa Bay’s lineup after a 60-day stint on the IL after a right wrist injury before the All-Star break. The Rays’ star shortstop, batting second, faced Yankees starter Frankie Montas in his first at bat since the injury and sent a first pitch fastball into centerfield for a one-out double. Randy Arozarena drove home Franco on the next pitch with another double to leftfield to give the Rays a lead in the first inning. In the fourth inning, Franco drove in two more runs with an RBI double that sent Yandy Diaz and Ji-Man Choi home from first and second, respectively. For the second time, an RBI double to leftfield by Arozarena scored Franco, bringing the score to 4-0 in the fourth. Drew Rasmussen, pitching for the first time against the Yankees this season and for the first time since going on paternity leave, tossed six scoreless innings. Rasmussen’s ERA dropped to 1.34 in his last seven starts as he continues his commanding streak on the mound, as he pitched a career high of ten strikeouts. Beeks relieved Rasmussen and gave up a walk to Osawld Peraza, who scored off a challenged RBI single by Aaron Judge from second to end the Rays’ six inning shutout. The Yankees threatened in the ninth, narrowing the Rays’ lead to just two runs and putting the tying run at the plate with two outs. After a late call to the bullpen that brought Shawn Armstrong to the mound, Manuel Margot caught a deep fly ball by Glyber Torres against the rightfield wall to end the game in the Rays' favor. With Friday night’s win, the Rays sit 3 ½ games back behind New York in the AL East and 1 ½ games ahead in the first wildcard spot Corey Kluber will lead the Rays on the mound in his 1:05 start on Saturday against Yankees’ Jameson Taillon. Other Notes: -In his last 11 games, Arozarena is batting .413 with five stolen bases and ten extra base hits. -Tyler Glasnow tossed 19 pitches in his first rehab assignment Wednesday and is, hopefully, set to return before the end of the season. -MLB confirmed new rules for the 2023 season today, including a ban on shifts and changes to the pitch clock. (More opinions on this will be coming soon, trust me.)
